SPICE™ Glossary / 3PL (third-party logistics provider)

3PL (third-party logistics provider)

A 3PL (third-party logistics provider) is a trading partner that performs outsourced logistics services, such as warehousing, order fulfillment, transportation management or freight forwarding, for another company.

Manufacturers, retailers and distributors use 3PLs to store inventory and ship orders without running every warehouse themselves, a model often called contract warehousing. Some 3PLs also arrange transportation, manage returns or handle value-added work such as kitting and labeling. A company may use several 3PLs across regions or channels, each with its own systems.

EDI with a 3PL keeps your ERP and the 3PL’s warehouse system in step. The main transactions are:

Inventory positions are often shared as well, for example with an inventory inquiry/advice (EDI 846). When warehouse events arrive late or don’t match the order, customers get wrong ship confirmations, invoices go out with the wrong quantities and inventory drifts out of balance. Linking each 3PL event to its order and shipment is what keeps fulfillment accurate.

How SPICE™ handles it

SPICE™ brings 3PLs into the same governed process as your carriers, suppliers and customers. Warehouse orders, shipping confirmations and warehouse events stay linked to the order and shipment they belong to, whether a 3PL connects by EDI, API or a guided web workspace. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 3PL and a carrier?

A carrier physically transports goods. A 3PL provides broader logistics services, most often warehousing and fulfillment, and may arrange transportation with carriers on your behalf.

Which EDI transactions do 3PLs use?

The most common are the 940 warehouse shipping order and the 945 warehouse shipping advice. Many 3PLs also exchange inventory advice and receiving transactions, depending on the services they provide.
