SPICE™ Glossary / Supplier enablement

Supplier enablement

Supplier enablement is the work of bringing suppliers onto a buyer's electronic procure-to-pay process, so they can receive orders and send confirmations, shipment notices and invoices in the required format.

For years, supplier enablement mostly meant getting suppliers onto EDI. That works for suppliers with the systems and staff to run it, but many suppliers, including large and sophisticated ones, don’t exchange EDI with every customer. Without a way to bring them in, their orders, changes and invoices stay in email, phone calls and spreadsheets, outside the buyer’s procure-to-pay controls.

Today, supplier enablement usually combines several channels:

  • EDI or API for fully integrated suppliers
  • Web and mobile workflows for non-EDI trading partners
  • Validated spreadsheet uploads for high-volume lines
  • Document digitization for suppliers that keep sending PDFs

The common pitfall is enabling suppliers into a separate tool that runs its own process. If web-entered documents don’t follow the same rules as EDI ones, the buyer ends up with two standards and two sets of exceptions. Hybrid trading partners, which send some documents by EDI and others another way, make this especially visible.

How SPICE™ handles it

SPICE Web OMS™ is supplier enablement and procure-to-pay collaboration software. Non-EDI and hybrid suppliers, carriers and 3PLs handle line-level confirmations, changes, ASNs with carton and pallet detail, labels, invoices, claims and deductions by web, mobile or spreadsheet, under the same rules as your EDI suppliers. The platform is built for every trading partner, whatever its technical capability.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is supplier enablement the same as supplier onboarding?

They overlap. Onboarding is the project of connecting a specific supplier: setup, testing and go-live. Supplier enablement is the broader goal of giving every supplier a workable way to take part in your electronic process, whatever its capability.

Do suppliers need EDI to be enabled?

No. EDI is one channel. Suppliers can also take part through APIs, web and mobile workflows, spreadsheet uploads or digitized documents, as long as each channel feeds the same validated process on the buyer's side.
