SPICE™ Glossary / Cloud EDI

Cloud EDI

Cloud EDI is EDI software and services delivered as a hosted service, so a company exchanges EDI documents without installing and running translation software on its own servers.

Traditional EDI meant buying translation software, installing it on company servers, and maintaining maps, connections and upgrades in-house. With cloud EDI, the provider hosts and operates the platform. You connect your ERP and your trading partners to it, and the provider handles infrastructure, updates and often monitoring. Pricing is usually by subscription and volume rather than up-front licenses.

Most cloud EDI is SaaS: many customers share one platform, with their data logically separated. That keeps costs down and makes updates automatic. Some organizations can’t use a shared platform because regulation, security policy or data-sovereignty rules require applications and data to stay within their own cloud, as is common in defense. For them, BYOC (bring your own cloud) fits better. See BYOC vs SaaS.

Moving EDI to the cloud changes who runs the infrastructure, not the work of the trading partner program itself. Maps, onboarding, testing and exception handling still need an owner, either your team or a managed EDI provider. A cloud platform that also handles non-EDI trading partners avoids running a second, manual process alongside it.

How SPICE™ handles it

SPICE™ runs as SaaS for most customers, with platform updates, monitoring and infrastructure handled for you. When your requirements call for it, the complete platform can instead be deployed in your own Azure subscription or AWS account (BYOC), including Azure Government. The products and trading partner model stay the same in each. See deployment options and the platform.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cloud EDI and self-hosted EDI?

Cloud EDI is hosted and operated by a provider, so you don't run the servers or apply upgrades. Self-hosted EDI runs on your own infrastructure, giving you full control but also full responsibility for maintenance. BYOC (bring your own cloud) sits between the two: a dedicated environment deployed by the provider inside your own cloud account.

Is cloud EDI secure?

It can be, but it depends on the provider and your requirements. Review access controls, encryption, data isolation, monitoring and incident response, and confirm where data is stored. If your policies don't allow a shared platform, look for a provider that can deploy in your own cloud.
