SPICE™ Glossary / B2B integration

B2B integration

B2B integration is the automated exchange of business transactions, such as orders, ship notices and invoices, between a company's systems and those of its trading partners.

Where application integration connects systems inside one company, B2B integration crosses company boundaries. It covers the connections themselves (EDI, APIs, AS2, SFTP), the translation between each trading partner’s format and your own, and the management of a community of trading partners with different capabilities and requirements.

A complete B2B integration program usually includes several layers of work beyond the connection itself. Gaps in any one of them tend to show up as manual effort, delays or rework somewhere else in the business, often far from the team that owns integration:

  • connectivity and protocol management
  • mapping and translation to your ERP, WMS and TMS
  • trading partner onboarding, testing and certification
  • monitoring, error handling and support
  • channels for trading partners that don’t use EDI or APIs

The hardest part is usually not technology. It is coverage and quality: getting every supplier, customer, carrier and warehouse connected, and making sure what they send is complete and correct. Traditional B2B integration confirms that a document was delivered; it rarely confirms that the quantity, price or ship date matches the order.

How SPICE™ handles it

SPICE™ approaches B2B integration as one governed process between your ERP and every trading partner. EDI, API, web, mobile and document channels feed the same validation and business rules across procure-to-pay, order-to-cash and logistics, so problems surface as exceptions rather than errors in your ERP. See the platform and how it brings in every trading partner.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between B2B integration and EDI?

EDI is one method of B2B integration, based on standard document formats. B2B integration is broader: it includes EDI, APIs, file transfer and other channels, plus the onboarding, mapping and monitoring needed to run a trading partner program.

What is a B2B integration platform?

It is software that manages connections, translation and monitoring for transactions between a company and its trading partners. Some also handle onboarding, non-EDI channels, validation and visibility, which determines how much manual work remains for your team.
