SPICE™ Glossary / Trading partner ecosystem

Trading partner ecosystem

A trading partner ecosystem is the full set of suppliers, customers, dealers, carriers and 3PLs a manufacturer, retailer or distributor exchanges orders, shipments, invoices and product data with.

The term, also called a trading partner community, describes your supply chain from the point of view of transactions. It covers the buying side (suppliers you issue purchase orders to), the selling side (customers and dealers who order from you) and the logistics providers that connect them. A large ecosystem can include many companies across several countries, business units and sites.

Ecosystems are rarely uniform. Some trading partners exchange EDI or API transactions from their own systems. Others are non-EDI trading partners that send email, PDFs and spreadsheets, or hybrid trading partners that mix the two. Requirements also differ by process: a retailer’s suppliers need to meet vendor compliance rules, while a manufacturer’s dealers need accurate pricing and order status.

Mapping the ecosystem is a useful first step in any program. Group trading partners by role, process, transaction volume and channel, then decide which segment to bring into a governed process first. The aim is for every trading partner to follow the same rules, even if each one connects differently.

How SPICE™ handles it

SPICE™ is a supply chain collaboration platform designed for the whole ecosystem, not only the part that runs EDI. It connects every trading partner through the channel each can support, from EDI and API to a guided web workspace or documents, and applies the same rules, validations and visibility to all of them across procure-to-pay, order-to-cash and logistics.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a trading partner community?

A trading partner community is another name for a trading partner ecosystem: all the companies a business exchanges supply chain transactions with. The term is common in EDI programs that onboard many suppliers or customers to the same requirements.

How do you manage a large trading partner ecosystem?

Segment trading partners by role, process and channel, set one set of requirements, and give each segment a way to meet them that fits its technology. Track onboarding progress and transaction quality centrally so exceptions are visible early.
