Your order desk confirms the order. Then the work passes to other companies. A contract warehouse picks, packs and ships it. A carrier accepts the load, or doesn’t. Your retailer, dealer or distributor customer expects a shipment notice that matches what left the dock and an invoice that matches what arrived.
For many manufacturers, that handoff runs through several carriers and 3PLs, often different ones by brand, plant or region. Some exchange EDI. Others send emails, spreadsheets and paper. When a warehouse’s shipping advice is late, the shipment notice to your customer is late too. Your supply chain is your customer experience, and for a manufacturer the final step is usually in someone else’s building.
