Transportation & contract warehousing for retailers

SPICE™ retail logistics EDI connects retailers with the carriers and contract warehouses that serve their distribution centers, stores and online orders, EDI or not, so shipment status, warehouse receipts, inventory and freight invoices run through one governed process.

Between the vendor’s dock and your shelf

Your vendors ship, and then carriers and contract warehouses take over. Carriers move inbound freight to your distribution centers and replenishment out to your stores. 3PLs may run a distribution center, handle e-commerce fulfillment or hold seasonal and overflow stock. Each one sends status in its own format and on its own schedule. Some exchange EDI; others send emails, spreadsheets and paper.

Your customers never see any of it. They see an empty shelf or an online order that arrives late. Your supply chain is your customer experience, and in retail the gap between a vendor’s shipment and your shelf is where it often breaks.

What gets in the way

  • Inbound freight you can’t see When you route vendor freight on your own carriers, missing tender responses and shipment status (214) leave receiving guessing which loads arrive today.
  • 3PL inventory you can’t trust Stock transfers (943), receipts (944) and inventory adjustments (947) arrive late or in spreadsheets, so the stock your storefront shows may not match what’s in the building.
  • Online orders depend on shipping advice If a fulfillment warehouse’s shipping advice (945) is late, customer service can’t tell a shopper where the order is.
  • Freight invoices pile up Many carriers, many formats, and charges that are hard to match to the load.
  • Peak season exposes every gap Volume rises, more carriers and warehouses join, and manual follow-up can’t keep pace.

How SPICE™ connects carriers and warehouses

Logistics runs through both sides of your business: the inbound freight that brings vendor goods to your distribution centers, and the replenishment and online orders that go out to your stores and customers. SPICE™ brings the carriers and contract warehouses on both sides into one governed process, EDI or not.

Hold carriers and 3PLs to your vendor standards

Retailers already measure vendors. The same discipline applies to the trading partners that move and hold your goods. SPICE Insight™ connects each PO to its ASN, carrier status, receipt and invoice, flags missing events and scores carriers and 3PLs on tender acceptance, status completeness, delivery performance and invoice accuracy. SpicY™ in SPICE Insight™ can answer questions like “which shipments need carrier follow-up today?”

Logistics runs on the same SPICE™ Supply Chain Collaboration Platform as procure to pay for retailers, with the same business rules and exception handling. Together with visibility and exception management for retailers, it gives you one view from vendor PO to store or customer delivery. What changes

01

Clean data

Carrier and warehouse documents arrive validated and mapped to your enterprise systems, from every trading partner and every channel.

02

Perfect order

Shipment status, receipts and freight invoices stay connected to the PO, so receiving plans ahead and accounts payable checks freight charges against what was agreed.

03

More control

Carriers and 3PLs follow the same rules as your vendors, and performance reviews rest on transaction evidence instead of anecdotes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is an EDI 214 shipment status for retailers?

The 214 is the shipment status message a carrier sends as a load moves: picked up, in transit, delayed or delivered. For a retailer it tells receiving which inbound loads to expect and tells customer service where store and online orders are. SPICE™ links each status to the order and shipment it belongs to and flags the ones that never arrive.

Our carriers and 3PLs aren't all on EDI. Can they still take part?

Yes. Those on EDI or API connect directly and can certify with SPICE iKompli™. Others use SPICE Web OMS™ to respond to tenders, post status and confirm receipts and shipments in a web workspace, and paper freight invoices can be digitized by SPICE Digital Document Service™. All channels feed one process.

Can we hold carriers and 3PLs to the same standards as vendors?

Yes. SPICE Insight™ scores carriers and contract warehouses on tender acceptance, status completeness, delivery performance and invoice accuracy, the same way it scores vendors on confirmations, ASNs and invoices. Reviews rest on transaction evidence from every channel.

Does SPICE™ replace our WMS or TMS?

No. Your ERP, warehouse and transportation systems keep planning and executing. SPICE™ connects them to your external carriers and contract warehouses, validates documents in both directions and keeps each one linked to the order and shipment it belongs to.
