Data pool (GDSN)

A data pool is a certified product-data repository in the GS1 Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN), through which suppliers publish standard item data to subscribing retailers and distributors.

The GDSN lets suppliers share product data once and have it reach every trading partner that subscribes to it. A supplier loads its item data into its chosen data pool. The item is registered in the GS1 Global Registry, and a retailer or distributor subscribes through its own data pool. When the supplier updates the item, subscribers receive the change.

A product data pool typically carries standard attributes:

  • GTIN and brand information
  • Descriptions and classification
  • Dimensions, weights and pack hierarchy
  • Selected regulatory and logistics attributes

Data pools are valuable, but they don’t solve new item setup on their own. Not every supplier participates, and the data rarely includes every attribute a specific buyer needs, such as internal classifications, buyer-specific fields or rich content. The buyer still has to collect the rest, validate it and map it to its own SKUs and item hierarchy.

How SPICE™ handles it

SPICE Catalog™ reuses the standard data already available in data pools, collects the missing attributes directly from suppliers through the channel that suits each one, and maps the complete record to your item hierarchy before publishing it. It works alongside your data pool rather than replacing it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the GDSN the same as a data pool?

No. The GDSN is the network; data pools are the certified services connected to it. Suppliers and buyers each work through a data pool, and the network synchronizes data between them.

Do all suppliers publish to a data pool?

No. Participation varies by industry, supplier size and buyer requirements. Buyers usually need another way to collect product data from suppliers that don't use a data pool.
