SPICE™ Glossary / PIM vs MDM

PIM vs MDM

PIM vs MDM compares product information management, which enriches product content for selling channels, with master data management, which governs core records such as products, customers and suppliers across systems.

Product information management (PIM) is built for selling. It holds the descriptions, images, specifications and marketing attributes that e-commerce sites, catalogs and marketplaces need, and it publishes that content to each channel. PIM users are usually merchandising, e-commerce and marketing teams.

Master data management (MDM) is built for consistency. It creates a single trusted record for core business entities, often products, customers, suppliers and locations, and keeps that record aligned across the ERP and other systems. MDM users are usually data governance, IT and operations teams.

Key differences in PIM vs MDM:

  • Scope: PIM covers product content; MDM can cover many data domains
  • Purpose: PIM supports channel selling; MDM supports operational accuracy
  • Users: PIM serves marketing and e-commerce; MDM serves governance and IT

Neither is designed mainly to collect data from suppliers. That supplier-facing step, part of new item setup, often still runs on spreadsheets and email before data reaches the PIM or MDM, even when suppliers publish to a data pool.

How SPICE™ handles it

SPICE Catalog™ is the supplier-facing product-data layer that works alongside your PIM, MDM or data pool rather than replacing them. It collects supplier product data, validates it, fills buyer-specific gaps, maps it to your item hierarchy and synchronizes approved records with your ERP, PIM and e-commerce systems. It is not an MDM platform.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you need both PIM and MDM?

Many larger companies use both: MDM for the trusted core record and PIM for the richer content each sales channel needs. Smaller programs often start with one and add the other as channels or data domains grow.

Where does supplier product data fit?

Supplier data feeds both systems, but it has to be collected, validated and mapped first. That onboarding step is often handled by a separate supplier-facing process or tool.
